Glen Docherty Glen Docherty (Scottish Gaelic: Gleann Dochartaich) is a glen in Wester Ross in Scotland, between Loch Maree and Kinlochewe to the west and Loch a'Chroisg and Achnasheen to the east. The A832 road runs through the glen, which runs between the peaks of Càrn a' Ghlinne (539 metres) to the north and Carn Loisgte (446 metres) to the south. Together with its slightly lower neighbour, Beinn na Caillich, it overlooks the Skye Bridge that links the towns of Kyle of Lochalsh and Kyleakin. It is said to resemble a kilt, with vertical basalt columns to form the pleats and intruded sills of dolerite forming the pattern. This is a popular stopping point on the road between Portree and Staffin and there is a large car park by the waterfall, at Ellishadder. You have to look north up the coast to see the Kilt Rock. Closer by is the Mealt Waterfall, which freefalls off the cliff for 170ft into the Sound of Raasay below. The house sits low in the landscape below a turf roof, the larch cladding will soon fade to a beautiful silver tone. This project was profiled on Channel Four's Grand Designs programme. Skye Museum of Island Life The Skye Museum of Island Life at Kilmuir, Isle of Skye was opened in 1965. The aim was to preserve a township of thatched cottages, each one depicting, as closely as possible, the conditions prevailing on the island at the close of the nineteenth century... There are very few old-fashioned thatched cottages to be seen today in the Highlands. Skye Museum of Island Life The weaver's house : 2013, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Skye Museum of Island Life The Old Barn : 2013, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Skye Museum of Island Life Cart wheel : 2013, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Talisker Distillery The distillery was founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, and built in 1831 at Carbost after a number of false starts on other sites when they acquired the lease of Talisker House from the MacLeod of MacLeod. The distillery was rebuilt 1880-87 and extended in 1900. When a new lease for the distillery was negotiated with the chief of Clan MacLeod in 1892 the annual payment was to be £23.12s and a ten-gallon cask of best-quality Talisker. It was rebuilt in 1960 after a stillhouse fire completely destroyed the distillery. The only distillery on the Isle of Skye, set on the shores of Loch Harport with dramatic views of the Cuillins.
