In 1841 the house was converted into a girls' school and two floors built on top. For almost 100 years, from 1891 to 1989, the building served as a prison for Ribe. Ribe Cathedral Our Lady Maria Cathedral (Danish: Vor Frue Maria Domkirke) is the official name of the cathedral. The first stone cathedral was begun by Bishop Thur in 1110 and completed in 1134. Tufa stone was imported from Germany to build a permanent structure, since stone in the area was not available. The cathedral was built in the Romanesque style with half-rounded arches supporting a flat timber ceiling. A terrible fire in 1176 burned the town and the new cathedral. Because it was not completely destroyed, Ribe Cathedral is Denmark's best preserved Romanesque building. The remnants of the old were blended with new construction in a new building material for the time, large red bricks. The church was enlarged so that the nave was flanked by double aisles on each side. In parts of the church, the old flat ceilings were raised and Gothic vaulting installed. : 2013, Denmark, G12, Holiday, Ribe, Tanska, city, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, travel The cat's head Late in the 12th century a magnificent main door way was carved for the cathedral. The relief above the door shows Jesus being taken down from the cross. About 50 years earlier a triangular relief showing the Day of Judgement was placed above the main door. The door is called the cat's head portal because of the two lions at the base of the two columns flanking the doorway. The old Town Hall The town hall was built around 1496 and was a private home. The town bought the building in 1709 from the widow Anna Knudsen, and it was used as town hall until the municipality reform January 1st 2007. The town hall is now used for weddings and meetings. The old building now includes a museum, taking us back to times where executioners with swords and torture instruments as well as watchmen with a mace were part of the normal life in town. Several of the awful artifacts from that time are exhibited in the old town hall, which also features paintings of Ribe’s prefects from 1600 to the present.
