Cholmley House Cholmley House or Whitby Hall is a banqueting house sited next to the ruins of Whitby Abbey. It was built in 1672 for £232,000 by Sir Hugh Cholmeley, whose family had acquired the Abbey ruins and the land around them after its dissolution in 1539 - from then until 1672, the family had lived in what had been the Abbey's gatehouse and guest lodgings. It was originally built as a square, with a square courtyard in front of it, known as the Stone Garden - this contains a replica of the Borghese Gladiator, another replica of which was owned by the builder of the house. : England, Englanti, Holiday, Whitby, kesäloma, matka, travel Gatekeeper's House Whitby Abbey's gatehouse : England, Englanti, Holiday, Whitby, kesäloma, matka, travel Whitby Abbey Whitby Abbey is a ruined Benedictine abbey overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby. The first monastery was founded in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon era King of Northumbria, Oswy (Oswiu) as Streoneshalh (the older name for Whitby). Streoneshalch was laid waste by Danes in successive raids between 867 and 870 under Ingwar and Ubba and remained desolate for more than 200 years. Reinfrid, a soldier of William the Conqueror, became a monk and travelled to Streoneshalh, which was then known as Prestebi or Hwitebi (the "white settlement" in Old Norse). He approached William de Percy who gave him the ruined monastery of St. Peter with two carucates of land, to found a new monastery. Serlo de Percy, the founder's brother, joined Reinfrid at the new monastery which followed the Benedictine rule. The second monastery lasted until it was destroyed by Henry VIII in 1540 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. : England, Englanti, Holiday, Whitby, kesäloma, matka, travel Whitby panorama The Church of Saint Mary in the front, the city and steep shore cliffs in the background. : England, Englanti, Holiday, Whitby, kesäloma, matka, travel
