The site also contained one of Dover's two 24 m Roman lighthouses (or Pharoses), one of which still survives. It was during the reign of Henry II that the castle began to take recognisable shape. The inner and outer baileys and the great keep belong to this time. Maurice the Engineer was responsible for building the keep, one of the last rectangular keeps ever built. : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, England, Englanti, historia, kesäloma, matka, sota, summer holiday, travel, war The Great Tower Dover Castle is above all a great medieval fortress, created by King Henry II and his Plantagenet successors. At its heart stands the mighty keep or Great Tower, 83 feet (25.3m) high and just under 100 feet (30m) square, with walls up to 21 feet (6.5m) thick. The grandest and among the last of the keeps raised by the kings of England during the 11th and 12th centuries, it was designed by Henry II’s architect ‘Maurice the Engineer’ and built between 1180 and 1185. A symbol of kingly power and authority guarding the gateway to the realm, it was also a palace designed for royal ceremony, and to house Henry’s travelling court. Within this magnificent showpiece, Henry could welcome and impress distinguished visitors to England– particularly noble pilgrims travelling to the new shrine in Canterbury Cathedral of St.Thomas Becket, slaughtered before the altar by Henry’s household knights only a dozen or so years before the Great Tower was begun. : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, Great Tower, historia, history, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel

It was built between 1221 and 1227 and is one of the most elaborate castle gateways in the country. It consists of five conjoined towers, designed to thrust well forward of the curtain wall and provide maximum flanking fire over the widest possible area. The whole complex structure is bound together at the rear to provide a hall and chambers for the Constable of the castle and his household, and adequate guardrooms and fighting platforms for its military working. : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, England, Englanti, historia, kesäloma, matka, sota, summer holiday, travel, war Constable's Residence The whole complex structure is bound together at the rear to provide a hall and chambers for the Constable of the castle and his household, and adequate guardrooms and fighting platforms for its military working. From the time it was built until the present day the Constable’s Gate at Dover has been the residence of the Constable of the Castle, or (as now) his or her Deputy. As a residence too there have been changes to make the interior less spartan for its inhabitants. In 1882 the back of the gate, within the Castle, was heavily restored. The brick arched structures joining the central tower to the flanking towers to the north and south are comparatively modern insertions, as are the Georgian windows and the balcony. : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, England, Englanti, historia, kesäloma, matka, sota, summer holiday, travel, war
Peverell's Tower and Gate House Peverell's tower is part of the original castle built by Henry II. It was originally a pair of square towers joined across the top to form a gatehouse, the round front was added later, by Henry III, as was the tower on the right hand side which has the conical tiled roof. : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, England, Englanti, historia, kesäloma, matka, sota, summer holiday, travel, war Dover castle The Inner walls and The Great Tower seen from the St Mary de Castro church : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, England, Englanti, historia, kesäloma, matka, sota, summer holiday, travel, war St Mary in Castro and Roman lighthouse ruins The present Saxon church was built on the Eastern Heights around AD1000. It is immediately adjacent to the surviving eastern pharos (24m high), which was used as a source of spolia: Roman tiles can be still be seen in the church fabric, particularly in the window arches (usually of stone), and flint and tile from the pharos is used throughout the church's walls : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, England, Englanti, historia, kesäloma, matka, sota, summer holiday, travel, war St Mary de Castro Inside view of St. Mary de Castro church : Dover, Dover castle, Doverin linna, England, Englanti, historia, kesäloma, matka, sota, summer holiday, travel, war

The Upper and Lower Lighthouses were designed to be used together. The seamen would line up the two lights, and when the Upper Light shone directly above the Lower Light they could steer safely past the southern tip of the Goodwin Sands. By 1904 the movement of Goodwin Sands meant that this arrangement was no longer safe, so the Lower Light was switched off. A much brighter flashing light was installed in the Upper Lighthouse. For most of the twentieth century South Foreland shone out nightly over the Straits of Dover until 30th September 1988 , when modern navigational aids meant that the lighthouse could be closed down. : Dover, England, Englanti, South Foreland lighthouse, beach, cliff, kallio, kesäloma, matka, ranta, summer holiday, travel The cliffs of Dover Cliffs seen from the South Foreland lighthouse, or at least close to it. : Dover, England, Englanti, beach, cliff, kallio, kesäloma, matka, ranta, summer holiday, travel Rabbit A little rabbit on our return journey from the South Foreland lighthouse : Dover, England, Englanti, beach, cliff, kallio, kesäloma, matka, ranta, summer holiday, travel
