The Vikings, looking for King Alfred, trapped the last remaining Saxon soldiers in a fortress, but they managed to charge free and defeat the Viking army. Some 800 men and their leader Earl Hubba died in the battle of Cynuit and some believe it may have been fought at Northam's Bloody Corner. Hubba's body was said to be buried underneath the Hubbastone, near the village's shipyard. The Quay  The Quay, Appledore : 2014, Appledore, Devon, England, Englanti, city, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel Floating Harbour  Floating Harbour with some buildings on the bank in dire need of restauration : 2014, Bristol, city, joki, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, river, summer holiday, travel, vesi, water St Peter's Church  The church has Saxon foundations, with a 12th-century lower tower, the rest of the church being built in the 15th century. Excavations in 1975 suggest that this was the site of Bristol's first church; the 12th-century city wall runs under the west end of the present church. It was bombed in the Bristol Blitz of 1940 and ruined. It is maintained as a monument to the civilian war dead of Bristol. : 2014, Bristol, England, Englanti, city, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel Old Council House  It was built as the city council chamber and treasurer's office between 1824 and 1827 by Sir Robert Smirke, on the site of the old St Ewan's church. The statue of Justice over the entrance is by Edward Hodges Baily. It was extended to the south-west in 1828-9 by Richard Shackleton Pope and George Dymond. Christ Church with St Ewen, All Saints & St George  A church has stood on the present site since Norman times, this probably being the third, but in 1786 the medieval building, which had a history of instability, was judged beyond repair and pulled down. The present church was then built after surrender of the southern side of the site to enable Wine Street to be widened. The present church was designed by William Paty and completed in 1790. The Paty family were architects and craftsmen involved in building and joinery as well as design. The Guildhall  Former Crown Court building, which is known as the Bristol Guildhall, and was built in the 1840s by Richard Shackleton Pope. The assize courts were attached to the rear of the Guildhall between 1867-70, by TS Pope and J Bindon. Originally a single gateway, the side passages were pushed through in 1820. The niches containing the statues of Brennus and Belinus are of the same period as the church. The cathedral presents a harmonious view of tall Gothic windows and pinnacled skyline that belies the fact that it was constructed over a period of more than 700 years. Its earliest parts date back to around 1170. It was the gatehouse for St Augustine's Abbey, which was the precursor of Bristol Cathedral. The gatehouse stands to the cathedral's west, and to its own west it is abutted by the Bristol Central Library building. The library's architectural design incorporated many of the gatehouse's features. The sculptural decorations on the archways of the gatehouse contain early examples of the use of pointed arches in England. Merchant Venturers Almshouses  Society of Merchant Venturers built them in 1696 for convalescent and retired sailors. The Coopers' Hall, built 1743–44, was incorporated as the theatre's foyer during 1970–72. Llandoger Trow  Its name comes from the village of Llandogo that is north of Bristol and was home to trows, which are flat-bottomed barges. The pub was built in 1644 and nearly did not survive bombing during the Second World War. : 2014, Bristol, England, Englanti, city, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel Bristol Bridge  The bridge is designed by James Bridges. Bridges fled to the West Indies in 1763 leaving Thomas Paty to complete it between 1763 and 1768. Resentment at the tolls exacted to cross the new bridge occasioned the Bristol Bridge Riot of 1793. The toll houses were turned into shops before they were removed. In the 19th century, the roadway was again congested, so walkways were added on either side, the supporting columns disguising the classical Georgian design.
