The walls were constructed between 1283 and 1287 after the foundation of Conwy by Edward I, and were designed to form an integrated system of defence alongside Conwy Castle. The walls are 1.3 km long and include 21 towers and three gatehouses. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around £15,000. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294–95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401. Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. In the aftermath the castle was partially slighted by Parliament to prevent it being used in any further revolt, and was finally completely ruined in 1665 when its remaining iron and lead was stripped and sold off. Conwy Castle became an attractive destination for painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitor numbers grew and initial restoration work was carried out in the second half of the 19th century. In the 21st century the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a tourist attraction. Conwy castle Rubin Eynon filled the base of the Prison Tower with a mound of armour and weaponry. On top rests Llywelyn’s sword and coronet. The abbey was favoured by the princes of Gwynedd, and many early medieval princes were buried here. Afte Edward I's invasion of north Wales the abbey was moved to Maenan, and St Mary's was rebuilt to serve as the parish church for Edward's new fortified town at Conwy. Though the building we see today is largely 12th century, with a 15th century carved screen and a later Tudor font. Conwy library and civic hall Situated in the centre of historic Conwy, by the Quay, the Civic Hall was designed in Tudor Gothic style of rubble stone with Bath ashlar dressings. Following a fire in 1966, what remained of the great hall was rebuilt in sheet-concrete and the buttressed foyer and tower incorporated. A 240-seat studio theatre was included in the reconstruction and the building also houses Conwy Library, an art exhibition space and other front of house facilities and meeting spaces. A report commissioned by the Council in 2007 suggested that the Hall had reached the end of its working life in its current configuration. The building is close to Porth Isaf (Lower Gate), one of the original archways in the town walls. The Liverpool Arms is a relic from the era when Conwy was a thriving port. It is said to have been named by one of its first owners, a ship’s captain who plied between Liverpool and Conwy. The house was lived in until 1900, when the owner was a 1.91 m fisherman named Robert Jones. The walls were constructed between 1283 and 1287 after the foundation of Conwy by Edward I, and were designed to form an integrated system of defence alongside Conwy Castle. The walls are 1.3 km long and include 21 towers and three gatehouses. The project was completed using large quantities of labourers brought in from England; the cost of building the castle and walls together came to around £15,000. The walls were slightly damaged during the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr in 1401, but political changes in the 16th century reduced the need to maintain such defences around the town. The fortifications were treated sympathetically during the development of the road and railway systems in Conwy during the 19th century and survived largely intact into the modern period. Today the walls form part of the UNESCO world heritage site administered by Cadw. Its been used as a wartime lookout, a house and featured in the Dulux adverts on the tv. 'The lighthouse has been noted for numerous ghostly sightings, people claiming to see a figure wearing old fashioned lighthouse keeper clothes and standing in front of the glass dome of the abandoned lighthouse.
