The entire harbour fell under artillery range from Portland Castle and nearby Sandsfoot Castle. Portland Castle has a low profile offering less of a target, with a traditional rounded wall facing the sea, designed to deflect incoming ordnance. The land side was moated. The castle was bolstered ready to repel the attempted invasion by the Spanish Armada in 1588. In the event the Royal Navy fended off the Spanish fleet in the Battle of Portland just east of the isle of Portland on 23. July 1588. Portland Castle experienced its only real action during the English Civil War 1642-1649. Being an historic Royal Manor, Portland naturally supported King Charles and was a Royalist stronghold. Nearby Weymouth - a merchant town - firmly backed Cromwell's Parliamentarians and a succession of battles and ruses saw Portland Castle captured and recaptured several times. : 2014, England, Englanti, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel

Longships Lighthouse Longships Lighthouse is located about 2.01 km off the coast of Lands End in Cornwall. It stands on Carn Bras, the highest of the Longships islets which rises 12 m above high water level. The lighthouse has been unmanned since 1988. The original tower was built in 1795 to the design of Trinity House architect Samuel Wyatt. The lantern was (24 m above sea level but very high seas obscured its light. In 1869 Trinity House began constructing a replacement. The building of the present granite tower used much of the equipment that had previously been used in the construction of the Wolf Rock Lighthouse. The tower was first lit in December 1873 having cost £43,870 to build. Even after these improvements, the S.S. Bluejacket was wrecked on rocks near the lighthouse on a clear night in 1898, nearly demolishing the lighthouse in the process. : Cornwall, England, Englanti, Land's End, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel Land's End Cliffs and sea at Land's End, a truly beautiful place even though the weather wasn't the best when we were there. : Cornwall, England, Englanti, Land's End, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel Land's End Cliffs and sea at Land's End, a truly beautiful place even though the weather wasn't the best when we were there. : Cornwall, England, Englanti, Land's End, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel Land's End Cliffs and sea at Land's End, a truly beautiful place even though the weather wasn't the best when we were there. : Cornwall, England, Englanti, Land's End, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel

The leaves are spirally arranged, simple, 10–35 cm long and 5–12 cm broad, and are covered with gray-white pubescent and glandular hairs, imparting a woolly texture. The foliage forms a tight rosette at ground level in the first year. The flowering stem develops in the second year, typically 1 to 2 m tall, sometimes longer. The flowers are arranged in a showy, terminal, elongated cluster, and each flower is tubular and pendent. The flowers are typically purple, but some plants, especially those under cultivation, may be pink, rose, yellow, or white. The inside surface of the flower tube is heavily spotted. Due to the presence of the cardiac glycoside digitoxin, the leaves, flowers and seeds of this plant are all poisonous to humans and some animals and can be fatal if eaten. : Cornwall, England, Englanti, Land's End, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel Cave One more cave at Land's end area : Cornwall, England, Englanti, Land's End, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel

The ships returned with Welsh coal to fire the steam engines used on the mines.
