The site contains evidence of human habitation as early as 3000 BC. Old Sarum is mentioned in some of the earliest records in the country. Old Sarum was originally an Iron Age hill fort strategically placed on the conjunction of two land trade routes and the River Avon. The hill fort is broadly oval shaped, measuring 400 metres in length and 360 metres in width; it consists of a double bank and intermediate ditch with an entrance on the eastern side. The site was used by the Romans, becoming the town of Sorviodunum. The Saxons used the site as a stronghold against marauding Vikings, and the Normans built a stone curtain wall around the Iron Age perimeter and a centrally placed castle on a motte protected by a deep dry moat. A royal palace was built within the castle for King Henry I and subsequently used by Plantagenet monarchs. A Norman cathedral and bishop's residence were built at the western end of the town. In 1219, the cathedral was demolished in favour of the new one built near the river and the townspeople moved down to the new city, then called New Salisbury or New Sarum. The castle fell out of use and was sold for materials by King Henry VIII. : 2014, Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, castle, historia, history, kesäloma, linna, matka, summer holiday, travel The Norman ditch The Norman ditch surrounding the inner bailey : 2014, Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, castle, historia, history, kesäloma, linna, matka, summer holiday, travel Main entrance There was originally (or at least in the Middle Ages) a gate building and drawbridge here. : 2014, Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, castle, historia, history, kesäloma, linna, matka, summer holiday, travel

The house would have contained a hall, chamber block, kitchen, service wing and chapels dedicated to St Nicholas and St Margaret. The chapel of St Margaret was on the lower level and would have been used by the servants and garrison. : 2014, Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, castle, historia, history, kesäloma, linna, matka, summer holiday, travel Toilets These toilets were located close to King's private suite. From the mid-1550s the house was leased by the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral to lay tenants, notably including Richard Mompesson and John Wyndham. Much of the current house's appearance is due to John Wyndham who lived here between 1718 and 1750. In the 1800s it housed the Godolphin Girls' school and a boys' boarding school (not at the same time!). After a period of decay and neglect in the 1960s, when demolition was considered by the Chapter, Arundells was faithfully renovated in 1964 by Mr and Mrs Robert Hawkings, with further refurbishment by Edward Heath when he came to live here in 1985. Sir Edward was able to purchase the freehold of the property in 1992 which is now owned and run by the charity set up in his name, the Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation. The name derives from James Everard Arundel, son of the 6th Lord Arundel of Wardour who married John Wyndham's daughter Ann. : 2014, Salisbury, Wiltshire, city, historia, history, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel Sarum College Sarum College is an ecumenical Christian institution in Salisbury, England. The college was established in 1995 and occupies the buildings formerly home to the Salisbury and Wells Theological College. It sits within the Cathedral Close on the north side of Salisbury Cathedral. The main building at the front of the site was built in 1677 and has long been attributed to Sir Christopher Wren for Francis Hill, a distinguished London lawyer and deputy recorder for Salisbury. He chose a particularly striking site, at the north end of Bishop's Walk, facing directly down to the Bishop's Palace (now the Cathedral School). The house remained in the Hill family until the end of the 18th century. : 2014, Salisbury, Wiltshire, city, historia, history, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel
