Ballycarbery castle There was some kind of residence situated on the site of the castle as early as 1398 however the present ruins were constructed in the 16th century. It was noted as a McCarthy Mor castle by some sources at that time but whether it was occupied by the McCarthy Mors or their wardens the O'Connells is unknown. The castle was passed onto Sir Valentine Browne following the death of its owner Donal McCarthy More. In 1652 it was attacked by cannon fire from Parliament forces during the War of the Three Kingdoms. In the 18th century a house was built on the site using the barn wall and it was inhabited by the Lauder family. This house was demolished in the early 20th century. : Ireland, Irlanti, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel Ballycarbery castle There was some kind of residence situated on the site of the castle as early as 1398 however the present ruins were constructed in the 16th century. Scariff and Deenish In 1837 on Scariff lived only one family; their main work was to care the cattle which grazed on the island. On the smumit of the hill there were remains of an ancient hermitage and, on the east side, ruins of a church. 1911 census does not report any inhabitant for Scariff Island. In 1837 on Deenish (which at that time was called Dinish) resided three families who mainly lived on the cattle which grazed on the island. 1911 census still reported six people living on the island. Staigue Fort The fort is thought to have been built during the late Iron Age, probably somewhere between 300 and 400 AD, as a defensive stronghold for a local lord or king. Staigue represents a considerable feat in engineering and building. It was built without mortar, using undressed stones. Vertical joints visible in the wall show that gaps were left during the building of the wall to allow access and were filled in later. There is also a tapered, lintelled doorway. Inside is an elaborate network of stairways leading to terraces and corbelled cells in the wall reached by passages. : Ireland, Irlanti, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel Staigue Fort The fort is thought to have been built during the late Iron Age, probably somewhere between 300 and 400 AD, as a defensive stronghold for a local lord or king. Foley's Foleys Restaurant and Townhouse was originally built in 1795 as a couching inn and has hosted generations of tourists. In the late1800's, part of the building was occupied by the Royal Irish Constabulary and local Fenian rebels were jailed here during the 1867 rebellion. Paddy Foley was born in 1915. Margaret Scollard was born in 1912. Paddy and Margaret met in Killarney and married in St. Mary's Cathedral in 1942. As a newly married couple, they rented No. 24 High Street and had three children, Nick, Seamus and Carol. In 1949 they decided to open a grocery shop and a small 20 seater restaurant with 7 guest bedrooms upstairs. Paddy grew his own vegetables in the back garden of the restaurant. These were sold in the grocery shop and used in the restaurant by Margaret. In 1964 the family had to move from No. 24 High Street as their lease was expired. They bought No. 23 High Street (now Foleys Restaurant) and renovated the property. They created another grocery shop at the front, a restaurant to the rear and 17 bedrooms upstairs. : Ireland, Irlanti, Killarney, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Treuvaud's Nice-looking building, now a restaurant : Ireland, Irlanti, Killarney, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Bird Wall ornament : Ireland, Irlanti, Killarney, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Bohereencael Glebe Houses with nice balconies : Ireland, Irlanti, Killarney, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

The building which we have today is the third known Church building on this site, and this building was errected in 1870. The beautiful stained glass windows were added several years after the church was built. They are made up from scenes from the Bible.
