Church of Saints Joseph and Conal and its round tower This prominent and well-detailed belltower associated with Catholic Church of SS Joseph & Conal is a local landmark and an interesting addition to the built heritage of the local area. It is constructed in the form of an early Medieval round tower, harking back to the golden era of the Church in Ireland, which is an appropriate form for an ecclesiastic structure of its type. It is robustly-built using local rubble stone and has high quality rock-faced masonry to the openings and smooth ashlar detailing to the conical roof that is clearly the work of skilled masons, and helps to give this structure a strong architectural character. This structure was originally built to serve an earlier Catholic church to site, which was described by Lewis in 1837 as in the 'course of erection'. This church later burnt to the ground in 1912 resulting in the construction of the new chapel adjacent. Rowan (1979) suggests that this tower was rebuilt in the nineteenth-century on older foundations, although it is not recorded as an archaeological structure. The use of rock-faced masonry is reminiscent of railway and bridge architecture in Ireland dating from c. 1860 - 1880, which suggests it was originally built around this time : 2015, Bruckless, Ireland, Irlanti, Nokia 808, church, historia, history, kesäloma, kirkko, matka, pyöreä torni, round tower, summer holiday, travel MG Midget MG Midget TC (1945-1949). They worked on a signalling system using ball and flag methods, where various messages could be transmitted from station to station using these signals. A 15m mast was positioned on the seaward side of the signal tower where the flags and balls would be hoisted so that the next signal tower could see the message and pass it on to the adjacent signal tower. : Carrigan Head, Ireland, Irlanti, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel

The British Admiralty constructed the present tower in 1805. Weather reports, which were so important to local and international shipping, were first recorded at Malin Head in 1870. It then became a Signal Tower for Lloyds of London using semaphore to connect with ships at sea and the lighthouse on Inishtrahull Island lying to the northeast of here. In 1902 the Marconi Company succeeded in sending the first commercial message by wireless from Malin Head to the ship S.S. Lake Ontario thus establishing Malin Head as an important staging post for future trans-Atlantic communication, however the Post Office took over from the Marconi Company in 1910. : Gleann Cholm Cille, Ireland, Irlanti, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel

The finely crafted stonework is typical of lighthouse construction, while the retention of early fabric enhances its historic character and integrity. This lighthouse was originally built to designs by George Halpin (1779 - 1854), who was Inspector of Works and Lighthouses for the Ballast Board from 1810 until his death in 1854. Halpin designed and/or supervised the construction of many lighthouses throughout Ireland, including those on Troy Island, St. John's Point, Fanad Head, Inishowen, Rotten Island near Killybegs, and on Inishtrahull in County Donegal. The main contractor involved in the construction here at Rathlin O'Birne was a James Creden/Credden, a builder and architect from Enniskillen. The light was first exhibited on the 4th or 14th of April 1856. The originally light (a six wick burner inside a revolving dioptric lens) was replaced by a paraffin vapour burner in 1908. This lighthouse was later converted to a nuclear power source (isotope generator) from 1974 until 1984. Rathlin O'Birne was first (and most powerful) lighthouse in the world to use this power source, which adds considerably to the technical interest to this site. It was later powered by wind generators (until 1994) and is now powered by solar panels to site. Set in an exposed and isolated situation off the coast of Malin Beg, this lighthouse acts as a monument to the skill and dedication of those involved in its initial construction, and to the lighthouse keepers stationed here from the mid-nineteenth century until automation in the mid-1970s. It forms the centrepiece of a group of related structures along with the former lighthouse keeper's houses to site (see 40908905) and the terrace of four two-storey houses in Gleann Cholm Cille/Glencolumbkille (see 40841010 to 40841013), which were built c. 1910 to house lighthouses keepers and their families who worked here at Rathlin O'Birne lighthouse, and is an important element of the extensive maritime heritage of County Donegal. : Gleann Cholm Cille, Ireland, Irlanti, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel Glengesh Pass Sloping hills form a serene sight. : 2015, Glengesh Pass, Ireland, Irlanti, Nokia 808, kesäloma, maisema, matka, scenery, summer holiday, travel
