Wicklow Gaol Wicklow's infamous jail was renowned throughout Ireland for the brutality of its keepers and the harsh conditions suffered by its inmates. The smells, vicious beatings, shocking food and disease-ridden air have long since gone. The prison was opened in 1702 to house inmates sentenced under the repressive Penal Laws and continued in the role until 1877, when it was reduced to the status of a remand prison (bridewell), before closing in 1924. The building fell into ruin before finally being restored in the 1990s in recognition of its historic significance. : 2015, Ireland, Irlanti, Nokia 808, Wicklow, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Wicklow Gaol Wicklow's infamous jail was renowned throughout Ireland for the brutality of its keepers and the harsh conditions suffered by its inmates. These standards were to be far-reaching and were to cover all aspects of the prison system, including the gaol structures themselves, the day to day running of the gaol and the method of annual scrutiny of gaols in the form of the Inspector General of Prisons. Sir Jeremiah, in his capacity as a medical man, had seen the urgent need to restructure the whole system by providing better facilities in terms of buildings, hygiene and sanitation. The constant threat of outbreaks of disease could be eradicated and the segregation of prisoners into separate male and female sections would enhance their well being. On visiting Wicklow Gaol in 1785 he viewed it as “a very insecure, bad prison” : 2015, Ireland, Irlanti, Nokia 808, Wicklow, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Wicklow Gaol Wicklow's infamous jail was renowned throughout Ireland for the brutality of its keepers and the harsh conditions suffered by its inmates. Black Castle This castle ruin stands on a rocky promontory over the sea, at the eastern side of the town. Following the arrival of the Norman’s in 1169 Earl Strongbow was granted the lands along the East Coast. He in turn granted those lands to Baron Maurice Fitzgerald on condition that he build castles for protection. The Black Castle was constantly under attack from local Chieftains, notably those of the O’Byrne and O’Toole clans and in 1301 they succeeded in totally destroying the castle. There is a fine vantage-point for views over the town and the coast of North Wicklow from the ruins. : 2015, Ireland, Irlanti, Nokia 808, Wicklow, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Black Castle This castle ruin stands on a rocky promontory over the sea, at the eastern side of the town. It has a population of 10,356 according to the 2011 census.. The River Vartry is the main river which flows through the town. The first Celts arrived in Ireland around 600BC. According to the Greek cartographer and historian, Ptolemy, the area around Wicklow was settled by a Celtic tribe called the Cauci/Canci. This tribe is believed to have originated in the region containing today's Belgium/German border. The area around Wicklow was referred to as Menapia in Ptolemy's map which itself dates back to 130 AD. Vikings landed in Ireland around 795 AD and began plundering monasteries and settlements for riches and to capture slaves. In the mid-9th century, Vikings established a base which took advantage of the natural harbour at Wicklow. It is from this chapter of Wicklow's history that the name 'Wicklow' originates. After the Norman invasion, Wicklow was granted to Maurice FitzGerald who set about building the 'Black Castle', a land-facing fortification that lies ruined on the coast immediately south of the harbour. The castle was briefly held by the local O'Byrne, the O'Toole and Kavanagh clans in the uprising of 1641 but was quickly abandoned when English troops approached the town. Sir Charles Coote, who led the troops is then recorded as engaging in "savage and indiscriminate" slaughter of the townspeople in an act of revenge. : 2015, Ireland, Irlanti, Nokia 808, Wicklow, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel
