St Canice's Cathedral The present building dates from the 13th century and is the second longest cathedral in Ireland. Beside the cathedral stands a 33m 9th-century round tower. St Canice's tower is an example of a well-preserved 9th-century "Celtic Christian" round tower. It is dedicated to St Canice. It is one of only two such medieval round towers in Ireland that can be climbed to the top. Kilkenny was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Ossory and St Canice's Cathedral stands on a site which has experienced Christian worship since the 6th century. The name of "Kilkenny" itself retains the anglicised version of the Irish Cill Chainnigh, which translates as "Church of Cainneach", or "Canice". : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, St. Canice, cathedral, katedraali, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel The nave The nave towards the altar. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, St. Canice, cathedral, katedraali, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel The nave The nave from the altar direction : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, St. Canice, cathedral, katedraali, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Crown of Life nave; south aisle; south; west-most Two lancets, 1930mm x 580mm and one quatrefoil. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, St. Canice, cathedral, katedraali, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

When the repairs were carried out some 20 years later, the choir and transept arches were built up, the tower stopped off at a much reduced height, and the three rebuilt piers and arches strengthened. The details at the tops of the new piers are rather curious, and suggest that the bishop and mason weren't too sure what to do with the arches. The closed up side arches were re opened by Dean Vignoles in the 1860s. The stone vaulting dates from the 15th Century. While it has been suggested that it was put in as further strengthening for the tower piers, it appears to be purely decorative. There is a ringing-chamber over the vaulting, with the bells hung in a new bell-chamber behind the tower parapets. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, St. Canice, cathedral, katedraali, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Piers Butler and Margaret Fitzgerald The tombs of Piers Butler (died 1539) and Margaret Fitzgerald (died 1542), carved with six Apostles, Philip, Andrew, Simon, Matthew, James major and Paul. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, St. Canice, cathedral, katedraali, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

The hammerbeam bosses were carved in 1865. The fir roofing was not weatherproof and the draughts within were consequently severe at all times – terrible in cold and windy weather. When snow fell, it was blown right in, and fell in a gentle shower on the congregation. Even a Victorian congregation would not endure this, so it all had to be re-roofed in 1879. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, St. Canice, cathedral, katedraali, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

At the date of his death, April 19th 1826, the sum of £1,389/17/2 (thirteen hundred and eighty nine pounds, seventeen shillings and tuppence) had been spent on the new building. Fortunately his nephew Fr John Gorman was appointed to succeed him as Parish Priest by the then Bispop of Ossory, Most Reverend Dr Kieran Marum. The new PP was rotally committed to completing the task begun by his uncle. A record of the exact date when the church opened for public worship has yet to be found. Account book records indicate the furbishment of the church took place over several years - doors and windows installed in 1829, altar (costing £24/11/8 (twenty four pounds, eleven shillings and eight pence)), porches and side doors installed in 1934 and painting and varnishing taking lace in 1839. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel
St. Mary's Cathedral Saint Mary’s was designed by William Deane Butler (c.1794-1857). He was chosen by Bishop William Kinsella (1793-1845) who instigated the building of St. Mary’s in February 1842. Work began in April 1843 and finished in 1857. On Sunday 4 October 1857, St. Mary’s had its grand opening, which consisted of a two-and-three-quarter hour ceremony that began at 6.15am. The cost of the building is estimated to have been £25,000. St. Mary’s is made from cut-limestone which was sourced locally. The cathedral has a cruciform plan and its style is described as ‘Early English Gothic’. The design is believed to have been based on Gloucester Cathedral in Gloucester, England. It is situated on the highest point in Kilkenny City and is a significant local landmark. The cathedral is variously referred to as "St Mary’s", "the church of St Kieran" and "the Cathedral of the Assumption". : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Black Abbey The name Black Abbey is based on the fact that in England and other countries the Dominicans were often referred to as "Black Friars" on account of the black cappa or cloak which they wear over their white habits. The priory was founded in 1225 by William Marshall the younger, Earl of Pembroke, who died in 1231. In 1349, the community within the priory was severely affected by the outbreak of bubonic plague known as the Black Death. Eight members of the community died in three months during this pandemic. After the plague years, very few structural changes were carried out at the priory up until the end of 15th century. In 1558, Ireland was under the rule of Elizabeth I of England, a Protestant queen, and the property of the priory was confiscated by the crown. Elizabeth died in 1603, but the new King, James I, was no kinder to the priory: it became a courthouse, and the Dominicans were forced to leave and find places to stay in other houses. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Lamp A different kind of lamp : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Dangerous cat A funny sign on a door : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

Rothe House is considered to be nationally significant because of the wide range of original post-medieval features which survive in good condition in Ireland. The first stone castle on the site, was completed in 1213. This was a square-shaped castle with towers at each corner; three of these original four towers survive to this day. James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormonde, bought the castle in 1391 and established himself as ruler of the area. The Butler dynasty then ruled the surrounding area for centuries. By the 18th century, the castle had become run down, reflecting the failing fortunes of the Butler family. However, some restoration was carried out by Anne Wandesford of Castlecomer, who brought wealth back into the family upon marrying John Butler, 17th Earl of Ormonde. In the 19th century, the Butlers then attempted to restore it to its original medieval appearance, also rebuilding the north wing and extending the south curtain wall. More extensions were added in 1854. The Butler family remained living in the castle until 1935, when they sold its contents for £6,000, moved to London, and abandoned it for thirty years. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kilkenny, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

In 1582, Sir Richard Shee founded the alms house 'to accommodate twelve poor persons'. During Sir Richard's life time he acquired a great deal of church property probably to prevent it from falling into the hands of reformers. He was known to be a very religious man. He said in his will that if the house was passed from the family the relative would be cursed, this curse would explain some of the desperate attempts to keep the house in the family down through the years. The Shee family came from Co. Kerry and Sir Richard Shee was a brilliant lawyer and a member of one of the most powerful and influential families in Kilkenny in the 16th century. Richard Shee held the office of Deputy Treasurer of Ireland and received a knighthood in 1582. He died in 1608. In 1752 the alms house was sold by Edmond Shee . The Shees were dispossessed during the Cromwellian era. The Shee family regained ownership of the house in 1756. The last record of any inmates in the house date back to 1830. The Alms house was in 1978 acquired by Kilkenny Corporation and restored to its original condition.
