Tipperary No, it's not such a long way after all. : 2015, Ireland, Irlanti, LG G3, Tipperary, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, travel Dunmore East Lighthouse An elegant lighthouse built to designs prepared by Alexander Nimmo (1783 - 1832), forming a prominent landmark in the harbour area of Dunmore East. Taking the distinctive form of a Doric column, the fluted detailing considerably enhances the architectural value of the composition, while attesting to very high quality stone masonry. Well maintained, the lighthouse presents an early aspect with important salient features and materials intact. The survival of a range of original mechanisms to the interior is also of significance, and identifies the technical engineering importance of the site. Freestanding single-bay three-stage granite ashlar lighthouse, built 1824, on a polygonal plan comprising tapered fluted shaft with moulded cornice having single-bay single-stage lantern over with ogee-domed capping. Ogee-domed sheet metal-lined capping to lantern with iron weathervane to apex. Granite ashlar walls with fluted motif, moulded cornice, and wrought iron lattice panel railings over. The tower has been in usage for different purposes for many centuries and is an important landmark in Waterford and an important remnant of its medieval urban defence system. It is the oldest civic building in Ireland and it is the only urban monument in Ireland to retain its Norse or Viking name. Reginald’s Tower was built in 1003, as part of the city wall, by Reginald (or Ragnall), son of Ivar, the Norse king of Waterford. It was originally built of wood, but was later replaced by the stone structure that exists today. The Norsemen of that period did not commonly use stone as a building material. However, excavations made in the 1990s have revealed that part of Waterford's defences were built in stone prior to the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1170. The present tower is likely to have been built in the 13th or 14th century; it may have been constructed between 1253 and 1280. In 1185 Prince John of England landed in Waterford and organised the rebuilding of the city's defences, including the tower. : Ireland, Irlanti, Reginald's Tower, Waterford, historia, history, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel
William Vincent Wallace Plaza William Vincent Wallace Plaza was built as the city’s millennium project in 2000 and was officially opened in 2001. It functions as both an amenity area where the goings and comings of the river can be savoured and performances can be enjoyed. A continuous walkway along the edge of the river connects the plaza to Rice Bridge and provides a pleasant stroll. The plaza is the perfect place to sit, relax and watch the world pass you by. The plaza is dedicated to William Vincent Wallace (1812-1865), born in Colbeck Street, who was one of Waterford’s most colourful sons and was famous for his operas Maritana, Lurline and Amber Witch. He is regarded as one of the greatest nineteenth-century composers. : Ireland, Irlanti, Waterford, historia, history, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Tall Ship Sculpture At the roundabout to the quay parking lot, is this sculpture of a tall ship by Cork artist Denis O'Connor. Designed by James Ryan (fl. 1876), the building is of interest for its original intended use as a custom house, representing a component of the activities along the quays, which historically supported the economy of the locality. Finely detailed, the stone work throughout attests to high quality local stone masonry. Clock Tower During the Victorian era, Waterford was Ireland’s busiest industrial port. It had the largest ship building yards in the country (before being surpassed by Belfast) and traded to 400 international ports all over the World. During this period there was a number of large scale public works projects built including this Clock Tower which is one of the best known landmarks in the City. It was built between 1860 – 1863 in an ornate Gothic style which used high quality granite stone masonry. It was was originally known as the Fountain Clock (as it had troughs for working horses to drink from) and the mechanisms for the clock and fountain are still of technical and engineering interest. : Ireland, Irlanti, Waterford, historia, history, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Christ Church Cathedral Cathedral of The Holy Trinity, Christ Church. In the 18th century, the city corporation recommended that the bishop erect a new building. The architect was John Roberts, who was responsible for much of Georgian Waterford. During the demolition of the old cathedral, a series of medieval vestments were discovered in 1773. They were presented by the then Anglican bishop, the Rt Revd Richard Chenevix, to his Roman Catholic counterpart, the Most Revd Peter Creagh, and are now kept in the Museum of Treasures in Waterford and the National Museum in Dublin. The present building has been described by architectural historian Mark Girouard as the finest 18th century ecclesiastical building in Ireland. Sculptures of vikings Strongbow and Aoife in front. Nevertheless, Ardmore is believed to be one of the oldest monasteries in Ireland. Declan converted the people of the Decies, an ancient principality of southern Ireland, to Christianity. The round tower at Ardmore was built in the 12th Century and raises its tapering form to a height of 97 feet. It is divided into four stories. The entrance doorway is a little over 13 feet from the ground, making the tower a refuge for the monks and a safe place for their books, chalices, and relics. : 2015, Ardmore, Ireland, Irlanti, LG G3, church, historia, history, kesäloma, kirkko, matka, pyöreä torni, round tower, summer holiday, travel Celtic Cross Foley family grave, the round tower in the back. : 2015, Ardmore, Ireland, Irlanti, LG G3, church, historia, history, kesäloma, kirkko, matka, pyöreä torni, round tower, summer holiday, travel St. Declan's Oratory St. Declan's oratory - traditionally the burial place of St. Declan. SS Ary memorial On the morning of Saturday 8th February, the steamer Ary left Port Talbot in Glamorganshire, South Wales, with a 600 ton of Coal bound for the port of Waterford. The ship failed to arrive at Waterford on Sunday as scheduled, and, as there was no news over the next few days, Lloyd's reported her missing. The heavy weather caused the cargo to shift, and a list to port developed that evening. The captain ordered water to be pumped into the starboard side of the ship. Efforts to right the ship were unsuccessful however, and at midnight they took to the boats shortly before the ship foundered. Jan Dorucki was the sole survivor of this disaster. Twelve of his companions, including Captain Kolk, were washed ashore and buried at Ardmore, leaving two members of the all male crew of 15 unaccounted for. Jan Dorucki spent several months in Dungarvan Hospital.
