Originally the site of a monastic settlement, the island is dominated by an 18th-century star fort named Fort Mitchel. The island's strategic location within the harbour meant it was used at times for defence and as a prison, but as of the early 21st century is under development as a heritage tourist attraction. : 2015, Cobh, Ireland, Irlanti, LG G3, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Spike Island The island was the site of a monastic settlement in the 7th century, and was used by smugglers for some time. Its location at the entrance to Cork Harbour meant that the island held strategic importance, and it was a significant site in the French intervention following the Glorious Revolution. The British government purchased the island in 1779 and developed Fort Westmoreland on the site to designs by Charles Vallancey. The fort was proposed by the Royal Engineer Charles Holloway and named for John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland, then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and fortified gun emplacements were constructed facing the mouth of the harbour. Later a prison and convict depot, the island was used to house "convicts" prior to penal transportation. It gained a reputation as "Ireland's Alcatraz". It remained in use as a garrison and prison through the Irish War of Independence, when IRA prisoners were held there. Richard Barrett was among those detained there, but escaped during the truce of 1921. Accordingly, even after the establishment of the Irish Free State, the Royal Navy continued to maintain its presence at Spike Island. Spike Island remained under British sovereignty until 11 July 1938 when, pursuant to the Anglo-Irish Trade Agreement of 25 April 1938, the territory was ceded to Ireland. Following its handover to Ireland, the island's installations were renamed Fort Mitchel - after John Mitchel, nationalist activist and political journalist who was held on the island for a time : Cobh, Ireland, Irlanti, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel Cobh The corner of Pearse Square and West Beach. : 2015, Cobh, Ireland, Irlanti, LG G3, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

During the big age of ocean steamliners, Cobh was the main port of Irish emigration and every larger shipping company had an office in the town. When the Cunard Line ship „Lusitania“ was sunk in 1915 off Kinsdale, rescue efforts were coordinated from this office while bodies of the victims were brought to the space in front of the office. Cunard and White Star merged in 1934 and Cobh's Cunard office was moved into the White Star Building. Years later, the building was sold and passed several hands. However, you can still see some details showing the Cunard heritage. Note the beautiful flower patterns. : 2015, Cobh, Ireland, Irlanti, LG G3, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel

The architects were E.W. Pugin, George Ashlin and Thomas Coleman. The clerk of works was Charles Guilfoyle Doran. The cathedral was begun in 1868 and finally completed in 1915, a total of 47 years. The foundation stone was laid on 30 September 1868 by Bishop William Keane. The roof was completed in 1879 and that same year the first Mass was celebrated on 15 June by Bishop John McCarthy. Building of the spire, the last of the major external works, was completed in March 1915. In 1868, when the cathedral was begun, Cobh or Queenstown as it was then called, was a relatively prosperous place. This was because it was Ireland's principal emigration outlet. More than five million people emigrated from Ireland in the nineteenth century - mainly to the United States, Australia and Canada - and a large proportion of them left from Queenstown. : 2015, Cobh, Ireland, Irlanti, LG G3, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel St Colman’s Cathedral Construction commenced in 1867.
