Amsterdam Central Railway Station Amsterdam Centraal was designed by Pierre Cuypers, who is also known for his design of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. While Cuypers was the principal architect, it is believed that he focused mostly on the decoration of the station building and left the structural design to railway engineers.[5] The station was built by contractor Philipp Holzmann. The new central station replaced Amsterdam Willemspoort Station, which had closed in 1878, as well as the temporary Westerdok Station used from 1878 to 1889. The station building was completed in 1884. : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town Amsterdam Central Railway Station Amsterdam Centraal was designed by Pierre Cuypers, who is also known for his design of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Nieuwe Kerk After the Oude Kerk ("Old Church") grew too small for the expanding population of the town, the bishop of Utrecht in 1408 gave permission to build a second parish church, the Nieuwe Kerk ("New Church"). This new church was consecrated to St. Mary and St. Catharine. The church was damaged by the city fires of 1421 and 1452 and burned down almost entirely in 1645, after which it was rebuilt in Gothic style. It underwent major renovation in 1892–1914, which added many neo-Gothic details, and was again renovated in 1959–1980. The second renovation proved expensive for the Dutch Reformed Church, forcing the church to be closed most of the time in order to save money on maintenance. The Nieuwe Kerk is no longer used for church services but is used as an exhibition space. It is also used for organ recitals. : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town Nieuwe Kerk After the Oude Kerk ("Old Church") grew too small for the expanding population of the town, the bishop of Utrecht in 1408 gave permission to build a second parish church, the Nieuwe Kerk ("New Church"). In this building, the Dutch West India Company's governors in 1625 ordered the construction of a fort on the island of Manhattan, laying the foundations for New York City. The building was constructed in 1617 as a meat market (on the ground floor) and waiting room for the local militia (on the upper floor). In 1623 it was rented by the Dutch West India Company, founded two years earlier, and was used until 1647 for meetings by the governing board of the Dutch West India Company. During this time the building was expanded with two wings around a central courtyard, tripling the size of the building. In 1647, the Dutch West India Company got into financial troubles and was forced to move to the West-Indisch Pakhuis, a Dutch West India Company warehouse on the IJ waterfront, which thereafter became known as the West-Indisch Huis. From 1660 the building was in use as gentlemen's lodgings (a hotel) and in 1825 it became a home for orphans and the elderly. The architect, Adrianus Bleijs (1842-1912) designed the church basing himself on a combination of several revival styles of which Neo-Baroque and neo-Renaissance are the most prominent models. The facade is crowned by two towers with a rose window in between. The centre of this window is formed by a bas relief depicting Christ and the four Evangelists, made in the Van den Bossche and Crevels workshop in 1886. A sculpture of the patron saint of both the church and the city of Amsterdam was placed in a niche in the upper section of the gable top. The well-known sculptor Bart van Hove (1850-1914) made the sculpture in 1886. The crossing is articulated by a large octagonal tower with a baroque dome and lantern and crowned by a cross. The basis of the groundplan is the scheme of the classic three-aisled cross-basilica, i.e. a nave, two aisles and a single transept. The choir is located as is usual, at the end of the nave. In the corners formed by the transept and the nave, two chapels are located, traditionally devoted to Mary and Joseph. The church was finished in 1887. : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town Basilica of St. Nicholas Officially the church was called St. Nicholas inside the Walls, i.e. the oldest part of the Amsterdam defence works. Oude Kerk The 800-year-old Oude Kerk ("old church") is Amsterdam’s oldest building and oldest parish church, founded ca. 1213 and consecrated in 1306 by the bishop of Utrecht with Saint Nicolas as its patron saint. After the Reformation in 1578 it became a Calvinist church, which it remains today. It stands in De Wallen, now Amsterdam's main red-light district. The square surrounding the church is the Oudekerksplein. The floor consists entirely of gravestones. The reason for this is that the church was built on a cemetery. Local citizens continued to be buried on the site within the confines of the church until 1865. There are 2500 graves in the Oude Kerk, under which are buried 10,000 Amsterdam citizens : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town Diabolo Gothic clothes store in Amsterdam Red Light District : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town National Monument The National Monument on Dam Square (Dutch: Nationaal Monument or Nationaal Monument op de Dam), Amsterdam, is a 1956 World War II monument in the Netherlands. Hotel Die Port van Cleve Hotel Die Port van Cleve owes its name to a plaque of ‘Huys te Kleef’, that was part of the building complex of brewery ‘De Hooiberg’. The brewery was located here since 1592, when widow Weyntgen Elberts bought the building and established the brewery of her husband here. In the years that followed, the building was expanded between the Nieuwezijds Voor- and Achterburgwal. Brewery ‘De Hooiberg’ was very successful and remained so until the 18th century. In 1863 the building complex was bought by Gerard Adriaan Heineken. Due to the filling of the canal and the name change of the Nieuwezijds Achterburgwal in Spuistraat, Heineken moved his brewery to its current location on the Stadhouderskade in Amsterdam. In 1888 the building was renovated. The façade was completely renovated in the Dutch neo-renaissance style, with sand stone, brick and high windows. This architectural design came from Amsterdam architect Isaac Gosschalk (1838–1907). : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town Levensverzekering Noord-Braband Waalwijk This beautiful building was built in 1843. : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town Haarlemmerstraat 24 Nice house with an artistic wall painting of Adam, Eve and the snake. : Amsterdam, Hollanti, Netherlands, building, kaupunki, kesäloma, rakennus, summer holiday, town The Anne Frank House It was in the annex of this house where Anne Frank and her family hid from Nazi persecution during World War II. In 1346, the beguines still lived in a house (a document of that time mentioned one beghynhuys). A courtyard was only first mentioned in 1389, probably after the religious status of the city rose due to the Amsterdam Eucharistic Miracle of 1345. Originally the Begijnhof was entirely encircled by water (the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, the Spui and the Begijnensloot or "Beguines' Ditch"), with the sole entrance located at the Begijnensteeg ("Beguines' Alley"), which had a bridge across the Begijnensloot. The gate, built in the years 1480, consisted of two towers and a guard house. After the gate went up in flames in a 1618 fire, only the guard house and part of the western tower remained standing. The tower was then rebuilt in Amsterdam Renaissance style in 1620, with an eight-sided top half and elegant open spire designed by Hendrick de Keyser, featuring a clockwork with four clockfaces and a carillon of bells. The carillon was made in 1668 by Pieter Hemony, who added new bells to the instrument that he and his brother François had made earlier for the tower of the Amsterdam stock exchange in 1651. He also made a bronze drum for automatic music to announce the strike of the hour and half hour bell. It also chimes on the quarter with a short melody. The old drum is still in function. In 1873, the original baton keyboard was removed from the carillon, in favor of changes to the clockwork mechanism. Since that year the Munt clock also had a minute arm. Rasphuis gate The Rasphuis was a "tuchthuis" or prison in Amsterdam that was established in 1596 in the former Convent of the Poor Clares on the Heiligeweg. In 1815 it was closed, and in 1892 the building was demolished to make way for a swimming pool. On the site today is the Kalvertoren shopping centre. The founding of the Rasphuis signified a sea-change in Dutch correctional thinking. Until then it was universally believed that criminals needed to be punished. In the Rasphuis, the effort was made to instill a sense of order and duty into the young men. The Rasphuis was thus intended as an institute for rehabilitation. During restoration works in 1968, much of the original 16th-century building reappeared and it turned out that the Library probably contains some of the oldest masonry in town and the only fireplace with a late medieval mantelpiece. : Amsterdam, Holiday, Hollanti, Netherlands, kaupunki, kesä, loma, summer holiday, town House boat This way of living was popular especially earlier, but nowadays it's very expensive. : Amsterdam, Holiday, Hollanti, Netherlands, kaupunki, kesä, loma, summer holiday, town Guard A little teddy bear watching from the window : Amsterdam, Holiday, Hollanti, Netherlands, kaupunki, kesä, loma, summer holiday, town Blauwbrug The bridge owes its name to a wooden "blue bridge" that was there from around 1600 but no longer exists and which was painted the characteristic blue of the Dutch flag. It kept the name after 1883 when it was replaced by the spans of a new bridge which is inspired by the architecture of several of the bridges over the Seine in Paris. it features tall, ornate street lamps topped by the imperial crown of Amsterdam, fish sculptures and foundations shaped like the prow of a medieval ship. : Amsterdam, Holiday, Hollanti, Netherlands, kaupunki, kesä, loma, summer holiday, town
Magere Brug The Magere Brug ("Skinny Bridge") is a bridge over the river Amstel in the city centre of Amsterdam. It connects the banks of the river at Kerkstraat (Church Street), between Keizersgracht (Emperors' Canal) and Prinsengracht (Princes' Canal). The central section of the Magere Brug is a bascule bridge made of white-painted wood. The present bridge was built in 1934. The first bridge at this site was built in 1691 as Kerkstraatbrug and had 13 arches. Because this bridge was very narrow, the locals called it magere brug, which literally means "skinny bridge" : Amsterdam, Holiday, Hollanti, Netherlands, kaupunki, kesä, loma, summer holiday, town Coco's Outback I don't know how honest is this sign, but it's a refreshing one nevertheless. : Amsterdam, Holiday, Hollanti, Netherlands, kaupunki, kesä, loma, summer holiday, town Herengracht 506 Built in 1685 by Isbrant Kieft, architect not known. Barlaeus Gymnasium Het Stedelijk Gymnasium was established in 1885. It is the oldest of the four gymnasia, although its origins stretch back to the Latijnse scholen (Latin schools) whose existence is documented as far back as 1594. In 1927, the name was changed in 1927 and it was named after Caspar Barlaeus. : Amsterdam, Holiday, Hollanti, Netherlands, kaupunki, kesä, loma, summer holiday, town Leidsestraat 40 Richly decorated facade of Leidsestraat 40. There's a sign which states this house been built in 1581, but I am very sceptical regarding of this.
