L'Aubette and the statue of Jean-Baptiste Kléber The Strasbourg Aubette building is built in classical style. Former military building serving as a barrack and guard house. Now a leisure center. It was built in 1765-1778 by Jacques-François Blondel. In the centre of this Kléber square is the statue of Jean Baptiste Kléber. After his slaughter in 1800 in Cairo, the body of Jean-Baptiste Kléber, general during the French Revolutionary Wars born in Strasbourg in 1753, was repatriated to France. Napoleon, fearing that his tomb would become a symbol to Republicanism, ordered it to stay at the Château d'If, on an island near Marseille. It stayed there for 18 years until Louis XVIII granted him a burial place in his hometown in Strasbourg. He was buried on 15 December 1838 below his statue located in the middle of Place Kléber. The statue, designed by Philippe Grass, was finally completed in 1838. : 2010, Aubette, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Ranska, Strasbourg, building, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma, rakennus Le Neubau The Neubau, was built in 1585 to house the city's administrative services, and is the oldest Renaissance building in Strasbourg. Its Classical-style 16th century facade rises up over 3 levels, decorated by Greek-style columns. After the destruction in 1781 of the Pfalz, the former headquarters of the Magistrate and the Councils, the Neubau became the City Hall for a short period. Devastated by the revolutionaries in 1793, it became the Chamber of Commerce in 1808. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Ranska, Strasbourg, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma Gutenberg Monument Gutenberg monument, erected in 1840 and created by David d'Angers (1788-1856). Maison Kammerzell Maison Kammerzell is the finest old burgher's house in the city. Considered a gem of Alsatian architecture, the Kammerzell House features a stone-built ground floor, half-timbered upper floors, traditional leaded windows, and rich carved ornamentation. The building's ground floor with its carved stone arches served as a space where merchants sold their wares during the 15th century. Built in 1427 but twice transformed in 1467 and 1589, the building as it is now historically belongs to the German Renaissance but is stylistically still attached to the Rhineland black and white timber-framed style of civil architecture. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Maison Kammerzell, Ranska, Strasbourg, building, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma, rakennus 15th Century town house Town house built in 1467-1469. Although considerable parts of it are still in Romanesque architecture, it is widely considered to be among the finest examples of high, or late, Gothic architecture. Erwin von Steinbach is credited for major contributions from 1277 to his death in 1318. At 142 metres, it was the world's tallest building from 1647 to 1874. Today it is the sixth-tallest church in the world and the highest extant structure built entirely in the Middle Ages. The site of the Strasbourg cathedral was used for several successive religious buildings, starting from the Argentoratum period (when a Roman sanctuary occupied the site) up to the building that is there today. It is known that a cathedral was erected by the bishop Saint Arbogast of the Strasbourg diocese at the end of the seventh century, on the base of a temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but nothing remains of it today. Strasbourg's previous cathedral, of which remains dating back to the late 4th century or early 5th century were unearthed in 1948 and 1956, was situated at the site of the current Église Saint-Étienne. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Ranska, Strasbourg, cathedral, city, historia, history, katedraali, kaupunki, loma Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg Rudolph I (also known as Rudolph of Habsburg) (1 May 1218 – 15 July 1291) was King of the Romans from 1273 until his death. The construction of a large store, what is now Galeries Lafayette, was the subject of a competition in 1912, won by architects Jules Berninger and Gustave Krafft. After the Franco-Prussian War, Strasbourg, then German, was faced with the question of an official residence for the Kaiser. The decision was made to create a building symbolic of imperial power, and after much debate, a square Neo-Renaissance design was chosen, remotely inspired by the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The architect was Hermann Eggert (1844–1920), who had already built, among other things, the Observatory of Strasbourg. Work began on March 22, 1884 in honour of William I's 87th birthday, and construction took five years. In 1923, the palace passed hands to the French state and today houses the department of fine arts and the national furniture of Alsace-Lorraine. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Palais du Rhin, Ranska, Strasbourg, building, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma, rakennus War memorial at Place de la République The war memorial of a mother with her two sons in the center of the Place de la République is a reminder of the plight of so many families in the Alsace region at a time when the region was at one time French, then German, then French. The memorial, created in the 1930s, is a Pietà – a statue of a mother holding her dead son, or in this case, the mother is holding her two dying sons. The sculptor, Leo-Ernest Drivier, designed the memorial with the intent that each of the two sons had fought for a different country, one France and one Germany. They fought to the death, but as a reminder of family ties, they hold hands in their last moments. Although the memorial is for the dead in World War I, there is no country named on the base of the statue – it simply reads “Our Dead” in memory of the people who died, no matter which country they happened to be fighting for. The dates of additional wars after the inauguration of the memorial have been added to the base. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Ranska, Strasbourg, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire After the destruction of the municipal library and the city's archives by Prussian artillery during the Siege of Strasbourg, the German Empire founded the BNU on 19 June 1872. The task of arranging its collections was given to historian and professor, Rodolphe Reuss. It became the regional library for the Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine, as, according to German tradition, every region should have at least one library. It was also an Academic library. The present-day building, which is a work of architects August Hartel and Skjold Neckelmann, was opened in 1895. : 2010, Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Ranska, Strasbourg, building, city, historia, history, kaupunki, kirjasto, library, loma, rakennus
National Theatre of Strasbourg The National Theatre of Strasbourg is a palatial building on Strasbourg's Place de la République, now occupied by a theatre company of the same name, the National Theatre of Strasbourg (Théatre national de Strasbourg - TNS). The TNS building was originally built to house the legislative assembly of the regional parliament of Alsace-Lorraine, after the area came under German control with the Treaty of Frankfurt (1871). It was built between 1888 and 1892 in neoclassical style by the architect partners August Hartel and Skjold Neckelmann. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, National Theatre of Strasbourg, Ranska, Strasbourg, building, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma, rakennus Pont du Théatre Pont du Théatre was built in 1870. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Pont du Théatre, Ranska, Strasbourg, bridge, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma, silta Police force on the go Policemen on bicycles patrolling the river bank. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Ranska, Strasbourg, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma, police, poliisi Passerelle du Faux Rempart A small pedestrian bridge over river L'Ill, completed in 1901. : 2010, France, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Passerelle du Faux Rempart, Ranska, Strasbourg, bridge, city, historia, history, kaupunki, loma, silta

Returning unharmed from the Crusades, the knight Henri de Müllenheim undertook the construction of a monastery for the Hermits of Saint William, an order of mendicant monks, in this marshy neighbourhood situated extra muros, that is, beyond the city walls. The elongated building, consecrated in 1301 and realised in 1307, is the only remnant of this group. Entirely brick and unvaulted, the church corresponds well to the ideal of the order, namely by its single nave and the simplicity of its exterior form. Sheltered by a pitched roof, its nave is topped and prolonged by a deep polygonal choir illuminated by high windows, which betrays its original function as the monks' meeting room. In 1331, by reason of its proximity to the port and wharfs, the church was chosen as parish by the newly established corporation of shipbuilders. The first bridge was built here in 1279, called Stephans-brücke.
