Porsche Museum Part 2

Pictures taken at Porsche Museum in Stuttgart on our Summer Holiday 2010. This section contains prototypes, one of a kinds and race cars.
Porsche 356 Nr 1 "Roadster" The Porsche 356/1 was the first real Porsche car created by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche. This prototype car was a two-seater open roadster with a mid-mounted, air-cooled flat-4 engine of 1,131 cc displacement that produced 40 horsepower (30 kW). While the body was an original design, most of the mechanicals (including engine and suspension) were derived from the Volkswagen Beetle which Ferry's father, Ferdinand Porsche, had designed. The aluminum roadster body of the 356/1 was designed by Porsche employee Erwin Komenda in April 1948 at Gmünd and completed only a month later. Smooth and low, the 356/1 set the pattern for later 356s with one fundamental difference; the engine of the production cars was moved behind the rear axle (to reduce costs and make room for two additional seats). The car was registered by the state of Carinthia (Kärnten) with the license plate K45-286 and made its maiden voyage on June 8, 1948. Only one 356/1 was made. : 2010, Keski-Eurooppa, Porsche-museum, Stuttgart, auto, car, historia, history, loma Porsche 356 Nr 1 "Roadster" The Porsche 356/1 was the first real Porsche car created by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche. Porsche Boxster prototype The Porsche Boxster prototype, designed by Grant Larson, was first introduced at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show. Based on the enthusiastic public response, Porsche immediately set to work on the real roadster. The Porsche Boxster, designed by Harm Lagaay based on the original Boxster concept, was first introduced in late 1996 in Europe and on January 4th 1997 at the L.A. Auto Show. Austro-Daimler Sascha The Austro-Daimler Sascha (also called Sascha or Sascha Porsche) is a car from 1922. It was designed by the German automaker Ferdinand Porsche. In that period, Porsche still worked for the Austrian Austro-Daimler and designed a small, lightweight sports car of 1100 cc that was revolutionary for its time. He had a cylinder engine with overhead valves and a bevel-driven overhead camshaft, like the later Fuhrmann engine in some Porsche 356 Carrera models. The car was named by Ferdinand Porsche after Sascha Kolowrat-Krakowsky, a friend who had encouraged him greatly to build a small, lightweight sports car. Aluminium tube frames were used, with air pressure gauges to check them. The 1969 24 Hours of Daytona were a disaster for Porsche, as all three 908/02 failed, and a Lola T70 won. At the 12 Hours of Sebring, a Ford GT40 defeated a trio of factory-entered 908/2s. At that time, the more powerful Porsche 917 was introduced in Geneva, and it seemed that the career of the 908 would be over. But with the larger car having arrived, the 908 started to succeed. The next race was the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch, where the 908 was finally successful, finishing 1-2-3 ahead of a Ferrari 312P. With additional wins at the 1000km Monza, the Targa Florio, the 1000km Spa and an overwhelming 1-2-3-4-5 at the 1000 km Nürburgring, the 1969 International Championship for Makes was secured for Porsche by the 908/02, while the Porsche 917 suffered teething problems. : 2010, Keski-Eurooppa, Porsche-museum, Stuttgart, auto, car, historia, history, loma A line of race cars The all-white 1969 Porsche 917 PA Spyder built for Can-Am Series with a 16-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. It was never used though as 12-cylinder turbo proved to be better. Two Gulf-917K Porsches of John Wyer Automotive from 1970 are also visible. The Porsche 917/20 takes a special place among the various 917 versions. It remains a unique one-off. Porsche engineers together with the French company SERA undertook the attempt to combine the advantages of the short and long tail 917. Its body was extremely wide and it had extremely rounded wheel cut-outs. As the track width remained unchanged, the wheels were hidden deeply in the wheel housings. The nose was equally low and flat like that of the new long-tail coupé, but shorter. But the best part was the fanciful paintwork which let the 917/20 go down in Porsche history as the "Pink Pig", "Big Berta" or even "Truffle Hunter". Porsche designer Anatole Lapine decided in favour of the pink body colour and labelled each of the body parts according to the butcher-style cuts. Porsche caused a sensation at Le Mans 1971 with the Pink Pig. It was the fastest car during the pre-race qualification session, although it was totally untested. But during the main race, the 917/20 running in fifth position dropped out shortly before the end due to an accident. : 2010, Keski-Eurooppa, Pink Pig, Porsche-museum, Stuttgart, auto, car, historia, history, loma

Due to the head gasket failures of the 1977 biturbo, Porsche parted with their air cooling tradition and introduced water-cooled cylinder heads in the 1978 engine, and equipped them with four valves too. Porsche 961 Porsche's 959 supercar included a racing program with this spectacular 961 which placed 7th overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was one of the few cars to race the event in 4WD and the only 959 that raced on track. In 1987, the car made its second appearance at Le Mans in classic Rothman's livery. Wider tires were fitted and power was up to 650 bhp. In the hands of Kees Nierop it suffered an accident and it's rear-end was extensively burned.
