However, its basis is medieval and Baroques. The Turkish reconstructed the mediaeval church into a mosque. According to the descriptions of the Turkish traveller Evlia Cheleby a medresse, or high school, operated in the building next to the church, in the original Franciscan monastery. According to the accounts of the famous traveller a led-roofed building stood here that incorporated a harem, a minaret and a chapel. Following the Turkish occupation the church and the monastery were returned to the Franciscans and they started the reconstruction in 1720. They sold the led roof of the mosque so that they could cover the costs of the construction. The reconstruction of the church and the monastery was completed by 1737. : 2010, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Pecs, building, church, kaupunki, kirkko, loma, rakennus, town The Franciscan Church A nice wall painting on the facade of the Franciscan church : 2010, Keski-Eurooppa, Pecs, building, church, kirkko, loma, rakennus, religion, uskonto Kossuth Ter Kossuth Square, the long building is Town Hall, built in 1891. : 2010, Holiday, Keski-Eurooppa, Pecs, building, kaupunki, loma, rakennus, town

After the city was taken over by the Turks the mosque of pasha Qasim was built from the rocks of Saint Bertalan. There existed a minaret next to the mosque the top of which was brought down in 1753. Its lower part was also demolished in 1766 and only its basement remained intact. In the inner wall, by the current main entrance, there is a mihrab that indicates the qibla; that is, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. The building took its current form during the reconstruction in 1939. Saint Bertalan bell is next to the mosque. The Trinity statue in the middle of the square reached completion in 1714 to commemorate the secession of an earlier plague. The once baroque statue was so much ruined by the end of the 19th century that the city had to make a new one made – done by György Kiss – which was inaugurated in 1908. : 2010, Keski-Eurooppa, building, historia, history, loma, moskeija, mosque, rakennus, religion, uskonto St. Bartholomew’s Bell Tower The three bells on three columns are practically a moving statue capable of rising up as a tower. It is elevated 13 meters by hydraulics hidden 13 meters deep. A bronze statue represents the eponym of the former church, the Apostle St. Bartholomew, patron saint of tanners and vineyards. Bartholomew suffered martyrdom in A.D. 70, when he was brutally executed. He was flayed alive, crucified and beheaded. Hence the snake represents Bartholomew’s main activity, exorcism while the crucifix represents suffering and his naked body in bronze is symbolic of his having been flayed. The peal and the composition ring to movement every day at 7.00, 12.00, 17.50 and 19.00 o’clock. In 1064, after a fire destroyed a Romanesque basilica, the King of Hungary, Peter Orseolo, initiated construction of Pécs Cathedral where the old church had stood. Completed in the twelfth century, it features Romanesque stone carvings of exceptional artistic value. In the sixteenth century, Turkish conquerors converted it into a mosque. The Hungarians, who regained control of the city in 1686, altered the building in the course of its return to a site of Christian worship. From 1806 to 1813, Mihaly Pollack, a master Hungarian architect, remodeled the building in the Gothic Revival style but did not address structural problems that had accrued due to the many changes to the building in the preceding centuries. By the late nineteenth century, much of the building was in critical need of structural repairs. From 1882 through 1891 architect Friedrich von Schmidt oversaw a restoration project that essentially leveled the building to its foundations and rebuilt it in a neo-Romanesque style. The statue of Bishop Ignaz Szepessy is in the front of the cathedral. : 2010, Holiday, Hungary, Keski-Eurooppa, Pecs, Unkari, building, cathedral, church, katedraali, kirkko, loma, rakennus, religion, uskonto Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul The main door of the cathedral with an unusual looking gate : 2010, Hungary, Keski-Eurooppa, Pecs, St. Peter and Paul, Unkari, cathedral, katedraali, loma, religion, uskonto Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul The main door of the cathedral with an unusual looking gate : 2010, Hungary, Keski-Eurooppa, Pecs, St. Peter and Paul, Unkari, cathedral, katedraali, loma, religion, uskonto
Archives of the Cathedral Parish and Collegiate The neo-classic, late Baroque building of the canonical archives and presbytery was built in 1784 based on the plans of the famous architect Sartory. The building was extended in 1794 according to the directions of János Krammer. The crypt, the cellar and the storage rooms were situated in the basement. The flat of the bell-ringers was on the ground floor, just as well as the rooms of the two chaplains, the kitchen and the flat of the clerk. The archivist's study, the archives room and the library were situated on the ground floor. The connection with the Cathedral was secured by a multi-storey passage way. During the reconstruction the present presbytery, the building was connected to the archives from the south. During the restoration of the Cathedral, the clock was taken down from the tower and was placed in the pediment of this building. The construction was finished in 1800, this is when the square in front of the Cathedral was reorganised and the remains of the eastern city wall and the southeast corner tower were demolished. : 2010, Baroque, Holiday, Hungary, Keski-Eurooppa, Pecs, Unkari, barokki, building, cathedral archives, loma, rakennus, religion, uskonto Vasvary house This is a one-floor business house with reception, having an original shop layout on the first floor and a flat on the second floor.
