A picturesque castle that frequently appears in photographs, film and television dominates the island, which lies about 1 kilometre from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan is part of the Kintail National Scenic Area, one of 40 in Scotland. Eilean Donan, which means simply "island of Donnán", is named after Donnán of Eigg, a Celtic saint martyred in 617. Donnán is said to have established a church on the island, though no trace of this remains. The castle was founded in the thirteenth century, and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan Macrae. In the early eighteenth century the Mackenzies' involvement in the Jacobite rebellions led in 1719 to the castle's destruction by government ships. Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap's twentieth-century reconstruction of the ruins produced the present buildings. : 2013, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Eilean Donan castle Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Donnain) is a small tidal island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland; since the castle's restoration in the early 20th Century, a footbridge has connected the island to the mainland. Ben Nevis Ben Nevis (Scottish Gaelic: Beinn Nibheis) is the highest mountain in the British Isles. Standing at 1,344 metres above sea level, it is located at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands, close to the town of Fort William. The mountain is a popular destination, attracting an estimated 100,000 ascents a year, around three-quarters of which use the Pony Path from Glen Nevis. The 700-metre cliffs of the north face are among the highest in the United Kingdom, providing classic scrambles and rock climbs of all difficulties for climbers and mountaineers. They are also the principal locations in the UK for ice climbing. The summit, which is the collapsed dome of an ancient volcano,[3] features the ruins of an observatory which was continuously staffed between 1883 and 1904. The meteorological data collected during this period are still important for understanding Scottish mountain weather. C. T. R. Wilson was inspired to invent the cloud chamber after a period spent working at the observatory. : 2013, Ben Nevis, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, mountain, travel, vuori Ben Nevis Distillery Ben Nevis Distillery is a distillery in Scotland that distills Ben Nevis 10 Years Old and Ben Nevis 21 Years Old whisky. It is located at Lochy Bridge in Fort William and sits just at the base of Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest mountain, which rises to 4,406 feet above sea level. A coastal distillery in the Western Highlands, Ben Nevis draws its water from the Allt a’Mhuilinn which originates from two pools, Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste. The distillery was founded in 1825 by 'Long John' McDonald, a 6 ft 4in descendant of a ruler of the western Scottish kingdom of Argyll (after whom the renowned blended Scotch, Long John, was named). After Long John's death in 1856, ownership was passed down to Donald McDonald, his son. A second distillery was sited nearby in 1878 and named Nevis Distillery. In a bid to keep up with growing demand, the two distilleries eventually became one in the early twentieth century. In 1955 the distillery was taken over by new proprietors with Joseph Hobbs in the driving seat. Under Hobbs's ownership, the distillery joined the ranks of those experimenting with continuous distillation, installing a Coffey Still which remained on the site for 26 years and made this distillery one of the first to produce malt and grain whisky simultaneously. The Japanese company Nikka (Japan) acquired the distillery in 1989 : 2013, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Laggan Dam Laggan Dam is a dam located on the River Spean south west of Loch Laggan in the Scottish Highlands. The dam is 213 metres long and rises 52 metres above its foundations, and is part of the Lochaber hydro-electric scheme. The structure was built by Balfour Beatty for the British Aluminium Company and construction was finished in 1934. Water from the dam is conveyed to Loch Treig through 4.8 km of tunnel. From there, the waters are conveyed to a power house at Fort William via 4.6 metre diameter pipe (24 km long. The dam can be found next to the A86 road from Fort William. The catchment area of the dam was increased by an aqueduct which can be seen at the side of the road in Strath Mashie. : 2013, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Cairngorm Mountain ski centre CairnGorm Mountain has a reputation as one of the most beautiful - and sometimes challenging - places to ski in the UK, as well as boasting Scotland's only funicular railway. It comprises two large three-storey blocks occupying two sides of the enclosure each with two rooms per floor. The barracks and enclosing walls were loopholed for musket firing, and bastion towers were built at opposite corners. The first castle recorded to have been built on this site appeared in 1229. By 1379 it formed the centre of activity of Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan and younger son of King Robert II of Scotland. Alexander is better remembered as the Wolf of Badenoch. He is notoriously remembered for falling out with the bishop of Moray and in retaliation destroying Elgin Cathedral and much of Elgin in 1390. The first castle at Ruthven was destroyed in 1451, but a second castle was re-built in its place in 1459 as a much grander fortification. : 2013, Holiday, Nokia Pureview 808, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel

It has been the seat of the Duke of Argyll, chief of Clan Campbell since the 17th century. The house is a mostly mid-18th-century neo-Gothic design. Designers who worked on the house include William Adam and Roger Morris; the interior includes a number of neoclassical rooms created for the 5th Duke by Robert Mylne. These are among the rooms open to the public. The 13th Duke and his family live in private apartments occupying two floors and set between two of the castle's crenellated circular towers. Recent renovations included the installation of the house's first central heating. In 1975, a devastating fire struck Inveraray and for some time the 12th Duke and his family lived in the castle basement while restorations requiring a worldwide fundraising drive were carried out. Inverary Castle is believed to be haunted by the "ghost of a harpist who was hanged in 1644 for peeping at the lady of the house." The sound of a mysterious harp playing has been reported by visitors to the castle. : 2013, EOS 5D, Holiday, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Inveraray castle Inveraray Castle is a country house near Inveraray in the county of Argyll, in western Scotland, on the shore of Loch Fyne, Scotland’s longest sea loch. The elaborate painting was completed in 1784 by two French artists Girard and Guinard, whose work only survives at Inveraray. The painting is of a quality unparalleled in Britain at that time and it is of little surprise to find that Girard was one of the principal decorative artists employed by the young Prince of Wales when decorating his grand residence Carlton House. The delicate tapestry dining chairs with gilding by Dupasquier and original Beavais tapestry upholstery were commissioned by the 5th Duke on one of his visits to France in the 1780s. The dining table, by Gillow of Lancaster dates from about 1800, the outstanding ormolu-mounted sideboards are from the late 18th century and the Waterford chandelier (the largest of three, of which the smaller pair hang in the Tapestry Drawing Room) is circa 1830.State Dining Room : 2013, EOS 5D, Holiday, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Inveraray castle Tapestry Drawing Room. Exquisitely decorated in the Parisian style and representing the most sophisticated tastes of the 1780s, this remarkable room still retains the original set of Beauvais tapestries in the setting specifically designed for it. As well as these magnificent tapestries, restored at Hampton Court Palace in 1976 after the huge fire, the room boasts architectural decoration by Girard. A highlight is his painted shutters with its delicate and fine brushwork. The original ceiling was designed by Robert Adam and was painted by Girard. Other features of the room include a painting of Lady Charlotte Campbell (daughter of the 5th Duke) as 'Aurora' by John Hoppner, a pair of confidantes with matching armchairs and a circular giltwood palm tree table with a specimen marble top inlaid with the 7th Duke of Argyll's coat of arms. : 2013, EOS 5D, Holiday, Scotland, Skotlanti, kesäloma, matka, travel Inveraray castle Armoury Hall.
