He was a commander in the Wexford Brigade of the Irish Republican Brotherhood during the failed 1916 Easter Rising in Enniscorthy. In 1958, a granite statue of Rafter, by A.J. As a Norman Castle, it features 4 corner towers, and a 4 storey rectangular keep. The original foundation of a castle on this site goes back to the 12th or 13th-century, though the current structure largely dates from the 16th. Enniscorthy Castle appears to echo the style of other local castles, such as Ferns Castle and Carlow Castle. The Castle had fallen into ruins by the early 20th century, and was restored by P.J. The market house was built before 1813 by the 3rd or the 4th Earl of Portsmouth. It was originally a five-bay two-storey building with a three-bay two-storey south elevation. It is recorded that part of it was used as a parish school in 1813 and it had occasional use as a Methodist chapel in 1837. It was extensively renovated after 1908 when a top floor was added to accommodate use as a technical school. It remains in this use until 1973. It is now the County Council and Urban Council Offices. 1798 Memorial Market Square - the bronze statue of Fr. John Murphy and Thomas Sinnott, The Pikeman, was unveiled on May 31, 1908 by the Wexford born Franciscan historian Fr. Patrick Kavanagh. William Fortune (b. 1848), administrator of the Parish of Saint Aidan, accommodating a town hall together with a theatre in a wholly-integrated composition making a dramatic visual impression in Castle Street. It was built in 1843 and was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin. Duffry Gate  The Battle of Enniscorthy was a land battle fought during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, on 28 May 1798, between forces of the British Crown and a force of Irish Rebels at Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland. The attack began at about 1 P.M, when the Rebels drove a herd of cattle through the towns’s Duffry gate, creating disorder among the loyalist defenders. St. Mary's Church  The present St Mary's Church, which serves the Church of Ireland community of the town and district, was built on the site of a former church bearing the same dedication, and was consecrated on March 31, 1846.
