Desmond Castle Desmond Castle was built as the Customs House for Kinsale about the year 1500 by Maurice FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Desmond, following the grant of the customs of the port of Kinsale to the Earls of Desmond by King Henry VII in 1497. It was used as a Customs House until 1641 when it was converted into a naval prison, following the construction of a new Customs House. The prisoners kept in the Castle were in the main French and Spanish, and the building became known locally as the “French Prison” as a result. In January 1747, a fire broke out, killing 54 of the prisoners. In 1791 the castle was donated by James Kearney MP to the town of Kinsale, and it was subsequently used as a town gaol till 1846, and during the Irish Famine as a workhouse. In 1938 it was taken into government hands, and in the 1990s was restored and opened to the public by the Office of Public Works. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kinsale, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel The Mansion House This little lane runs uphill from the Giant's Cottage to Desmond Castle. In the 15th - 16th centuries the old harbour of Kinsale used to be situated at the bottom of the lane and Desmond Castle served as a customs house. One of the castle museum's exhibits is a sedan chair, which was used to transport merchants from their ships to the castle to settle their bills with the customs. The men who carried them lived in the small houses in what is now Chairman's Lane, which explains its name. : Ireland, Irlanti, Kinsale, kaupunki, kesäloma, matka, summer holiday, town, travel The Mansion House This little lane runs uphill from the Giant's Cottage to Desmond Castle. The replacement was constructed of stone, cast iron now being considered unsatisfactory. The new lighthouse was designed by William Douglass and built under the supervision of James Kavanagh. Construction started in 1897 with the levelling of the site, and the first of 2,047 Cornish granite dovetailed blocks was laid in June 1899. As well as these blocks, weighing 4,300 tons in total and with a volume of 1,645 m³, a further 116 m³ of granite was used to fill the inside of the tower up to the level of the entrance floor 17.7 m above high-water mark. A small steamship, the Ierne, was specially constructed for carrying the blocks out to the island, and Kavenagh personally set every stone, which weighed between 1¾ and 3 tons. The new lighthouse entered service on 27 June 1904 having cost nearly £90,000. The masonry tower is 44.5 m high, but the focal point of the light is 48.5 m above high-water mark. The base of the lighthouse is 15.8 m in diameter with the first course of stone 150 mm below high-water mark, and the first ten of the 89 courses built into the rock. : Ireland, Irlanti, Mizen Head, kesäloma, maisema, matka, meri, scenery, sea, summer holiday, travel Mizen Head Mizen Head rocky scenes : Ireland, Irlanti, Mizen Head, kesäloma, maisema, matka, meri, scenery, sea, summer holiday, travel Mizen Head Signal Station Keepers’ Quarters in the former Irish Lights Signal Station : Ireland, Irlanti, Mizen Head, kesäloma, maisema, matka, meri, scenery, sea, summer holiday, travel
The Arched Bridge The original bridge was completed in 1909 for the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL) and was used to provide access for lighthouse keepers and for CIL staff. It comprised both precast and in-situ reinforced concrete elements and was the first reinforced concrete bridge to be built in Ireland. Its span was of a record length for reinforced concrete arch construction at the time. Since 1994, when public access was given to the lighthouse buildings, around 50,000 visitors have crossed the bridge annually. New Mizen Head Footbridge opened to the public on St Patrick’s Day, 17th March 2011. Fáilte Ireland, the Commissioners of Irish Lights, and Cork County Council jointly funded the Euro1.8 million rebuilding contract. It was delivered safely, within budget and stands as testimony to a very successful collaboration between the client, Cork County Council, the contractor, Carillion Irishenco Ltd, RB International - the contractor's construction engineer, and RPS Consulting Engineers Ltd. : Ireland, Irlanti, Mizen Head, kesäloma, maisema, matka, meri, scenery, sea, summer holiday, travel The Arched Bridge The original bridge was completed in 1909 for the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL) and was used to provide access for lighthouse keepers and for CIL staff.
